For six years, I was the resident musician under the famous banyan tree in downtown Lahaina on Maui. I was a member of the Lahaina Arts Society, and I provided the music every other weekend for the LAS Art Fairs. It was a lot of fun, and I met lots of amazing people, including Carlos Santana and Mick Fleetwood. One day a young man with a knapsack full of wooden flutes walked up and asked if he could play a song with me. Naturally, I agreed, and we began playing for the next half hour blending the sweet sound of his flutes with my Chapman Stick. Quite a crowd gathered to hear us play!
It was like magic considering we’d never met before. People were asking to buy our CD, but we had to tell them this was our first time playing together and there wasn’t one. (Yet!)
Lance Israel came back to the next art fair, and we recorded every song throughout the weekend. We ended up with a massive bag of tapes. We took the best hour’s worth of material on those tapes and had it mixed and mastered by triple Grammy winner (Steely Dan) Dave Russell in Paia. The album has received many accolades over the years and still sounds just as good as the day we recorded it.
